I didn't start with the hair color experimentation until I was into my 20's. As with most women, I was ready for a change....and make it a drastic one. The usual girl stuff...I had just gotten out of a relationship...it ended badly...blah blah blah.
About this period in time, year 2003, the new trend for chicks was to get these massively chunky highlights. I figured, why the hell not! I went in to my then-hairstylist at Purdue, asked for highlights....chunky and blonde, and that's exactly what I got. Mind this...my natural hair color is dark brown. It used to be lighter brown, but has gotten darker and darker as the years have progressed. And my hairstylist didn't make it just any blonde, but chunky platinum blonde. The contrast between the different colors of my hair were about as far as you can get...pretty much black vs. white. My mother came up with a name for me after this first go 'round with the color..."skunk." I wish I had a photo to post online, but I don't have anything from that era saved online! It was a fun fad while it lasted.
After a run with this, I decided it should be back to the norm for my final college days. I do have a photo from this era, compliments of my BFF, Rebecca:

Then, it was off to Arizona. If you've never been there, I will just go ahead and say this: most of the chicks are blonde. I wasn't ready to fall into this culture. In fact, for the first 6 months I was in Arizona, I had some qualms about the people I met there...much more materialistic than the Midwest in my opinion. But, I try not to make too many generalizations. So, I did my best to not fall into the fold...at one point I decided that I wanted to be anti-Arizonan, so I went even darker. Personally, this is the period in time where I like my hair the most...long, straight, dark!

Things seem to be all fine and dandy in my life, then off I go, into another bad relationship with a guy. We break up. No color change this time, instead I opt for door number 2....CHOP CHOP CHOP.

Props to my boys, Austin and Gary from back home (Gary was mentioned in a previous post...search for "shit-eating grin" and you'll find him).
This short, dark version lasted for about a year....then I just got tired of being idle on the hair color front, and felt time for something just a little wilder.....

BAM!!!
I honestly didn't know how it would turn out. Could I pull it off? Turns out that would be a yes! To the people that knew me with dark hair, it was certainly something to get used to, but for the folks that met me as a blonde, it's exactly the opposite...they take a look at my drivers license and can't believe their eyes.
Do blondes really have more fun? I don't think so. You get a different type of attention, in my experience. I think I got "checked out" more often, but that's not really my preference. I feel brainier as a brunette...and with that said, and over a year of blondeness under my belt...I think I'm ready to revert!
One of the issues with coloring your hair is that it can be QUITE expensive. Since I've been on a very tight budget, it just isn't going to be in the cards for me for awhile. Since Seattle seems much less materialistic, I just really haven't given a damn about my roots since moving here. That's right...I've let almost 3 months of regrowth just be. As Mom would say...I'm back to skunk...only now it's 3 inches of black roots with blonde ends. I wonder how long I can go without dying it all back to dark brown? How long before it truly looks hideous!

We shall see! I will keep you all updated!
P.S. I just started reading another memoir...this one is called Loose Girls. REALLY REALLY REALLY hoping that I don't identify with this one like I did with Smashed (for obvious reasons!).

I loved the picture with the longer dark hair. It looked beautiful. Mom liked your short, dark cut. She thinks you're one of the few people who can carry off that look! Good to read your blogs. Been a long time.
Oh yeah, I think my favorite on you (of the photos posted) is the short dark look. Gorgeous!
I, too, am going back to my natural color these days. Not that I ever did anything as drastic as your blonde, but I did rock a dark auburn there for awhile and more recently went for some blonde highlights. But now it's time to be JUST a redhead again.
I love the pics my little skunk ;) I will say that I love the dark look too!
