Productive hobbies

Everyone should have a hobby, in my opinion. Something outside of regular work that they can view as an accomplishment. I have one of these. I show horses. Quarter Horses to be exact. I don't get to head out on the show circuit as much as I would like, since I just don't have the large amount of income needed to spend on it, but I do the best I can with what I've got.

My horse just got back into training this month with Kim Gately, the trainer/barn manager at my current barn in Woodinville, Paradise Stables. Click here to take a look at the barn. She works almost exclusively with Paint horses, but she decided to take on my Quarter Horse anyway. The riding style is the same for both breeds, so that isn't an issue. My hope for him is to finish his training for trail. If you have never seen a trail class, take a look below....this is a world champion trail horse....pretty kick ass if you ask me:

Lately, I've been craving something new to add to this hobby. Obviously, showing horses competitively takes a lot of training and practice, so I can't lie, that's where the majority of my free time goes. But, I would love to find something less time-consuming that would be useful to learn.

Some of my ideas:

1.) Sewing. Yes, I know....so domestic, right? Doesn't sound like me, does it? Well, I'm getting a little more girlie with age I suppose. I have been getting pretty crafty in the cooking and baking department these days. I found some cool classes at Stitches, a fabric store in Capitol Hill. Click here to check out their site. In the beginners classes you can either make a pair of pants or a shopping bag. I think I'm all about the bag, baby.

2.) Rock climbing. I actually started climbing my first year in Arizona. A guy friend of mine had all the gear I needed, all I had to do was buy a pair of climbing shoes. This was a great hobby in Arizona, because there were plenty of places to climb that were only an hour outside of the city. Alas, in Seattle, it just isn't the same...but they have a pretty kickass climbing gym in Ballard, Stone Gardens. Click here to check out their site. This would be a little more expensive, but it would definitely be a bigger challenge and would get me in better shape.

3.) Guitar lessons. I have this lovely Taylor acoustic guitar that I've had for a few years, but have only taken lessons through a beginner level....the poor thing is just going to waste sitting around at home. I either need to pick it back up, or sell it.

It's awesome to see other people get really involved in their hobbies. I used to work with a woman who was a professional ballroom dancer. It all started out as a hobby in her early 30's, then just went from there.

I know plenty of musicians as well. It's so much fun to watch your friends' bands play live. There is one musician I know that has another interesting hobby as well.....comics. Click here to check out his comic site.

I'll keep you posted on where I go from here. What's your hobby?

Knitting is my favorite hobby since I picked it up (for real this time) senior year of college. It's perfect because 1. it can easily be done while watching DVDs, so I can do so all day and argue that my time was not wasted and 2. there is nothing in the world like a pair of hand knit socks. HEAVEN! :-)
