While I was eating lunch yesterday, I came to a realization...I’m a lot more like my father than I thought I was.
I’ve always known that I’m stubborn and a tad willful (I think I get that from BOTH parents though), but what I hadn’t noticed before is the number of mannerisms I have in common with my dad.
I noticed this at lunch yesterday because I was eating a wonderful leftover grilled cheese I made the night before when I came to realize that I had been all goggle-eyed and staring off into space for about 10 minutes straight. I used to make fun of my dad for doing this very thing all the time when I was growing up. At the dinner table he would never hear what any one of us was saying because he was so engrossed in enjoying his food and daydreaming at the same time.
Other things that I do just like my father:
1.) Watch storms. My dad always sits out on our old front porch swing as the dark clouds roll in. I actually have a huge fear of storms, but something about the smell of the rain and the quiet calm before the storm really soothes me. (Or maybe it’s the adrenaline rush that follows.)
2.) Watch the news. When I’m at home in Indiana visiting my parents and I decide to watch some television, without fail, when I turn on the tv it will be on CNN. My father just can’t seem to get enough. I think he might have media overload, honestly. I’m guilty of this as well, but more along the lines of reading news updates online constantly rather than watching it via broadcast.
3.) I have selective hearing. Or rather, I pretend not to hear certain people. INFAMOUS trait inherited by my dad. Although, at his nearing-elderly age, I have to chalk some of it up to hearing loss =).
My father and I tend to butt heads occasionally...maybe it’s because we’re too alike! (This scares me.)
